Nuthin’ to It But to Do It! by Jackie J
I participated in my first powerlifting meet last Fall – the Fall Festival of Power organized by Carolina Powerlifting! You wouldn’t think nine reps of anything (plus warm up sets) would be so tiring, but I was just exhausted!! It was a super fun time, though, and everyone was just so nice.
The meet went great for me – it would be hard for it to have gone any better!! I hit all nine of my lifts (three each of squat, bench press, and deadlift). I was slightly conservative on my squat, because it is the first event, and I was a little nervous about squat depth. My last squat was within a few pounds of my all-time personal record (PR), though. I hit a PR on the bench press, which was awesome, then equaled my all-time PR on the deadlift. I think I could have done a little more on both the squat and deadlift, but who knows!! Altogether, I ended up with SQ: 214#, BP: 138#, and DL: 303# for a total of 655#. That’s a 55# improvement from when I started training for this, so I am really happy with it!!
I didn’t get any pictures during the meet itself – didn’t have it together enough. This picture is the one photo I had someone take of me at the very end. Technically, I finished 2nd in my weight and gender class, so this is a real medal from the event!! There were only three of us in my weight class though (hehe) so this is totally really for participation. The lady who won lifted 200# total more than me! But hey, if you’re going to take a picture, might as well take it with something shiny!!!
Those of you who have actually read this far should totally consider doing one of these! It is a great event if you’re someone who is reasonably strong, but slower at the bodyweight/met-con stuff we do.. All in all, it was a great day and I’m totally going to do another one!
