At CrossFit Local we focus on developing and enhancing functional fitness through strength and conditioning. Each workout includes a warm-up, personalized instruction on skills and movements, strength work, and a blazing workout to condition you metabolically. Our unique fitness philosophy creates a gym that is personal and truly yours. CrossFit Local was voted one of the best gyms in Orange County and Chapel Hill/Carrboro. We have been a CrossFit affiliate since 2009, making us the oldest CrossFit in the Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough area. Our gym has members from the entire Triangle including Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough and Raleigh.

The making of CrossFit Local
I am Chad Edwards and together with my wife, Kelly, we own CrossFit Local. After completion of high school, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science degree. Upon graduation, I began employment as a personal trainer at a local gym. I trained from before sunrise to past sunset most days of the week. Over the course of my experience working as a trainer, I felt an element was missing. Training was fun, but had become repetitive and lacked excitement. Competition, an environment in which I thrive, is the component that was lacking. As a result, despite their best efforts and mine, my clients were not meeting their personal fitness goals.
Around 2006 a movie called 300 was released which changed my life in a variety of ways. The actors were really strong and I developed a strong desire to achieve that level of strength. I scoured the internet for workouts used in training for the movie and found the “300 workout.” Eager to achieve Spartan-strength, I did the workout and it proceeded to demolish me. As a personal trainer I was shamed. This seemingly simple workout made my athletic ability questionable. After doing more research, I read a comment stating that the workout “looked similar to CrossFit.” I discovered CrossFit.com and gave it a read. “Helen” appeared simple: 400 meter run, 21 kettlebell swings, and 12 pull ups; repeat three times. Panting on the floor, 20 minutes later, I was thinking that CrossFit was anything but simple!After experiencing the revelation of CrossFit, I was dissatisfied working in the traditional gym setting. I have since left that arena to help others experience the true satisfaction of achieving personal fitness goals. I attained my Level 1 CrossFit certification in 2010 and devote myself wholeheartedly to this program. I am proud to call myself an athlete because of the changes I have seen in my life, both in performance and in overall well-being. The most important reward I have gained since implementing CrossFit is assisting clients in realizing not only their fitness goals but goals that allow them to grow personally.My wife, Kelly, has also seen amazing results from CrossFit. She had never been able to consistently exercise and was feeling fatigued until starting CrossFit in 2010. Ever since, she has been filled with energy and is always happy to share her story. It makes me proud to see my wife’s self-esteem and confidence level so high.
CrossFit Local is an incredible, supportive community. I am honored to call it my box. Being a CrossFit affiliate owner is a dream I have harbored for so long and am thankful that it has been realized.
CrossFit Local is thriving as a community of friends and athletes. Being able to provide a facility for members to train hard and meet new friends is deeply satisfying and rewarding. Thank you CrossFit for creating such a powerful, life-changing program.
5 ½ years ago, Chad finally convinced me to try CrossFit. I was so afraid of it I started out doing CrossFit Kids, at home, by myself. Why? I was scared and embarrassed. I was afraid of not being able to keep up. I was afraid people would see how out of shape and weak I was. I was intimidated by the workouts and afraid I’d throw up.
So what did I do? I showed up anyway. The warm up was a 400m run. Running? Yuck, I hate running (yes, present tense – still do). Halfway around, I had to stop. I couldn’t finish. I was walking, breathing hard, feeling like I could cry. Yep, 200m into my warm up run, I was walking… how embarrassing. Along came a class buddy who had already completed her 400m run and circled back to get me. She told me I could do it, to just pick up my feet and move, slow, steady, go, she was with me. Together, we finished.
Hm, so this is what CrossFit is about. Teams. Camraderie. Support. Friends. This is so much better than working out alone.
I’d like to say from that moment on, everything was wonderful sunshine and butterflies, PRs (personal records) all the time. Are you kidding? It was hard. I was incredibly, miserably sore. I confused the snatch with the clean with the jerk (all Olympic weightlifting movements). I felt incompetent, silly and out of my element. But somewhere along the line I started to care less about how I looked while at CrossFit and focused instead on my form and feeling strong.
Goals were reached. Milestones met. The shift from feeling afraid to empowered happened, but slowly.
Please don’t ever think that any skill or strength that I have just happened or that it’s just naturally there. I set goals and I train hard. I have put in blood, sweat and tears while lifting to achieve great technique and PRs. I eat clean so I can perform and feel better (abs are also a nice perk). I still have many skills to improve and learn so I work on those continually. I still hate running but I do it anyway. Why? Because I never want to be that girl who was so embarrassed that I worked out alone and couldn’t finish a warmup.
Stop avoiding your fears. Embrace them. Conquer them. Continue to hate them, but don’t let them own you.
If you are new to this whole CrossFit thing, be patient with yourself. Congratulate yourself on showing up and know that this is a process, a continuum of change. If you have been with us for a while, continually strive to get better.
