What a Crew! by Coach Kelly
Do you know why CrossFit Local coaches are the best? You might be thinking, yes, I do! They’ve encouraged me in class, motivated me to achieve a goal, inspired me to hit a PR and ensured movement safety in class. Okay, maybe you’re just thinking how great it is that they greet you with a smile, know your name and make sure you leave having had fun in their class!
All of those are correct and do make our team amazing! What you might not know, though, is that before they ever get to earn the privilege of wearing that Coach shirt, they must first be members here. Yep, they all started in classes here first. Why? That’s how important we feel our community is. Not only do they understand how we run classes, they’ve been a part of them.
Next, they apply to our Instructor Training Program (ITP). They submit an essay explaining to us why they want to be a Local coach. Once they’re enrolled in ITP, they have a list of requirements to complete including shadowing/assistant coaching weekly and attending group sessions with us. Chad has a degree in Exercise Sport Science from UNC and has been working with athletes for almost 15 years! We want to pass on some of that expertise to our coaching team.
Finally, our prospective coaches complete a written exam, an oral exam, and 5 coaching evaluations. Once we feel like they are a good fit, they can then go take their CrossFit Level 1 to official become coaches. We’re proud to say we have a 100% pass rate!
Once they earn the title of Coach, their work is not done. We have monthly coach meetings and participate in continuing education so we’re continually honing our skills.
So there you have it – our recipe for developing an outstanding coaching team. We have 20 coaches on our team with certifications in CrossFit Kids, endurance, goal setting, gymnastics, mobility and USA Weightlifting so be sure to let us know how we can help you 🙂
