Emily’s first introduction to CrossFit was at the University of Mary Washington where she studied Art History and played rugby. One afternoon in the weight room she noticed a group of students repeating these crazy exercises (which turned out to be burpees, thrusters, and box jumps) at a furious pace. How intriguing! After graduating and moving back to her hometown of Chapel Hill she looked for a more guided introduction to CrossFit and found Local.

Before joining Local in 2010, Emily competed in marathons and triathlons and studied ballet. Growing up in the ballet culture taught her to value body aesthetics over ability and daintiness over strength. Since finding CrossFit she’s shed that value system and learned an entirely new way to define and strive for fitness and health. Emily particularly enjoys the variety of movement that’s fundamental to CrossFit workout programming because it staves off boredom and helps her meet the varied demands of her life outside the box. When she’s not coaching or working out at Local, Emily teaches 3 and 4-year old students at a Chapel Hill preschool, plays drums in a rock band, teaches art classes for kids at the Ackland Art Museum at UNC, and volunteers with UNC Hospice.
