CHAD EDWARDS

OWNER

Chad embodies what it means to be physically active and mentally strong. His lifelong commitment to fitness began with his earliest experiences as a Boy Scout, which provided a solid foundation for his capacity to learn, teach, and lead. While in high school, despite playing both soccer and baseball as well as maintaining his status as an honor student, he attained the coveted Eagle Scout distinction.

At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill he earned both Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degrees. During his time at UNC, he realized his enthusiasm for coaching while working at the Student Recreation Center and Rams Head Recreation Center. He also served as the Intramural Sports Captain for the Carolina Baptist Student Union.

After graduation, Chad worked as a personal trainer at local gyms, continually refining and honing his skills. Some of his original clients have followed him to Local. With over a decade in the fitness industry, Chad has coached all levels of physical fitness, from the elderly to the high-caliber athlete.

Chad’s understanding of the human body, and its potential to rehabilitate itself and excel, allow him to coach his clients in the most efficient and effective way. The variety of functional movements performed at high-intensity, which is a hallmark of CrossFit, leads to real, tangible results. Chad has seen the changes in his own life, both in performance and overall well-being, from implementing the CrossFit modalities. He is always excited to share that wisdom and passion with his clients.

Fitness is not just a job for Chad, it is a way of life. He is committed to providing the community with a place where he can assist clients in realizing not only their personal fitness goals but goals that allow them to grow personally. He is happy to report that while in California, he visited the original CrossFit and trained with Eva T. He loves to hunt, fish and spend time outdoors. In his free time, Chad enjoys spending time with his wife Kelly, daughter Evelyn and their puppies Kaiah and Comet.

KELLY EDWARDS

OWNER

After being fed up with a lack of results from her elliptical training sessions, Kelly came around to CrossFit. She started at home with Eva T’s bodyweight workouts. Due to a persistent, encouraging and very patient husband, she finally made her way into the box.

CrossFit has really changed her life, in only the most positive ways. Like many women, Kelly had always felt self-conscious of at least one part of her body. CrossFit has provided an environment where she not only embraced, but became proud of her body’s strength! This in turn has greatly influenced her self-esteem. CrossFit has changed her life is such radical ways that she wants to share this with others.

Kelly is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nursing. When she is not in the box, she works as a relief nurse practitioner. She likes to read, watch theatre, cheer on the Tar Heels, play with her pups Kaiah and Comet, go fishing with her dad and spend time with her wonderful husband in her free time.

JUSTIN HUCKABY

COACH

Justin (aka “Huck”) grew up in a small town of northern Louisiana playing any and every sport available. In summer of 2010, a friend introduced him to CrossFit-based workouts following the CrossFit mainsite programming. As a competitive high school cross country runner and endurance athlete, Huck loved the uniquely challenging metabolic conditioning workouts provided by CrossFit.

Following his high school glory days, he continued CrossFit training throughout his undergraduate and graduate school careers. Huck graduated from Louisiana Tech University in northern Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in biomedical engineering with an emphasis on pharmaceutical science at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Upon moving to North Carolina and starting graduate school at UNC in 2015, Huck immediately began training at CrossFit Local and fell in
love with the community. He has competed in numerous local and international CrossFit competitions over the last few years, including Wodapalooza in 2019 as a team athlete.

Outside of the gym, Huck can usually be found conducting scientific experiments in lab or attending concerts and music festivals. His overall passion and life goals reside in promoting healthy living and high quality of life for everyone through the intersection of developing new and effective medicines and therapies as a research scientist along with leading individuals towards an active lifestyle through  CrossFit coaching and training.

JOSH HYDEN

COACH

Josh grew up in rural Kentucky, where in his formative years he spent a great deal of time outdoors communing with nature. This bond with the outdoors has carried over into his adult life, where he still enjoys spending as much time outside as possible. He studied Classics at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he was free to explore his passion for the outdoors via mountain biking, hiking, and various other outdoor shenanigans.

The journey to stay fit has led Josh down many paths, such as competitive swimming for 12 years, Marathon running, and becoming a certified kettlebell instructor. He believes that of all these forms of exercise and athletics CrossFit has helped him to attain the most well-balanced fitness practice.

Josh began his career as a CrossFitter in 2012 after attending a foundations course with another friend who was interested in joining. After one year of training, Josh realized that he wanted to devote more time to his CrossFit practice and took the plunge to become a coach at Local. Josh strives to bring energy and enthusiasm to each class he coaches, while assisting each athlete he works with to achieve his or her fitness goals.

JOSH FOX

COACH

Following his move from New York, Josh embraced the Chapel Hill youth sports scene and competed in a variety of different little leagues, but did not find his athletic passion until discovering wrestling when he was 12 years old. He became obsessed with the sport and quickly learned how important one’s fitness was in regards to their performance on the wrestling mat. Josh loved the one on one, man versus man nature of wrestling and the fact that you were responsible for your success, no one else. During the off-season he would focus on exercise routines specifically designed to increase his endurance, stamina, and overall fitness.

After recording well over 100 wins during his high school career, Josh was recruited by a few colleges and continued wrestling for a D-1 university. Shortly before college graduation, one of Josh’s closest friends died tragically and this completely altered his life course and inspired him to pursue a career helping people in his community. Within a couple of weeks Josh was working in an emergency room, but he sorely missed the competitiveness of college athletics and the pursuit to continually improve one’s skills and health. He worked out in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts gyms, but nothing could compare to the intensity and team unity he experienced while wrestling. Fitness remained an important part of his life, but it was unfulfilling and stagnant.

When Josh learned a childhood friend of his was coaching at CrossFit Local he decided to give it a try one early morning and the workout of the day, “Karen,” absolutely annihilated him. He thought he was in shape, but he could not even complete it. He might have thrown up (he did). There was equipment he was unfamiliar with, fitness language he had never heard of, and lots of nice strangers cheering him on. He was awestruck; it was love at first sight. Classes felt like wrestling practice and these strangers quickly became teammates and friends. The community embraced him and before long CrossFit Local became his home away from home.

After competing in several CrossFit competitions Josh realized he would like to give back to the community that has provided him with so much by combining his passion for fitness and helping people by becoming a coach at Local. Josh is inspired when people improve, break new grounds, and celebrate their accomplishments. He adores the sport of CrossFit and likes to share his knowledge with the athletes at Local so feel free to stop him and ask anything you’d like!

Josh enjoys getting to know the athletes he is coaching and looks forward to becoming familiar with their strengths and weaknesses. He is of the “wake up and grind” mindset so you will catch him at the gym well before the sun comes up. When fitness is not the focal part of his life, Josh likes volunteering, being outdoors with his American pit bull terrier, watching MMA and UNC basketball, reading non-fiction, writing creatively, discovering new music, and hanging out with friends & family.

SPENSER SMITH

COACH

Spenser originally hails from a small town in southern Indiana, where he played sports nearly year-round: basketball, baseball, football, track and field, you name it. His athletic youth led him to a lifelong commitment to fitness and sports.

He found CrossFit during his college years in 2014 and was very impressed with how effective it was compared to everything else he had done. In 2016 Spenser moved to Chapel Hill and earned his PharmD from UNC. During this time, he found CrossFit Local and became a member and has been getting fitter ever since! 

Spenser decided to become a CrossFit coach because he believes it can dramatically improve people’s health and quality of life, from the advanced athlete to the beginner. As a pharmacist, Spenser sees the consequences of the chronic disease epidemic regularly, and he believes the CrossFit methodology is an elegant solution to this problem. One of his proudest accomplishments was encouraging his mother to join a gym and despite never following an exercise regimen before. She is now in better shape than ever before and setting back squat PRs in her 60s!

MARC JOHNSON

COACH

Growing up, Marc played a variety of sports, including soccer, football and baseball. He has always enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, as well as ATV Motorcross. As he got older and transitioned to college in Greensboro, Marc joined your typical globo gym and worked out that way for years.
 
After graduating college and getting married, Marc gained some weight and decided to give CrossFit a try. What he found at CrossFit Local was community, challenging workouts and noticeable results. After being a member at Local for 3 years, Marc decided to become a coach. He loves seeing the change in people in classes!
 
Marc‘s favorite things are spending time with his awesome wife and son, heavy deadlifting, riding trails in West Virginia, being outdoors, and hanging out with his friends.

KRISTIN MCCARTHY

COACH

Kristin has been a CrossFit Local member and our gym’s unofficial cheerleader since 2016. She focuses mainly on Powerlifting and Strongman but loves the occasional CrossFit WOD.

Kristin’s daughter Caitlin is a CrossFit Local Teen and she has a full-time job as a Sorority Chef at Kappa Delta Sorority at UNC-Chapel Hill so look for yummy treats from her at the gym from time to time.

MICHAEL WHITTON

COACH

Michael grew up outside of Charlotte, NC and had a fairly active childhood. Basketball, soccer, and tennis kept him busy until he moved to Asheville for college where he discovered the twin joys of his life: hiking in North Carolina’s beautiful outdoors and Ultimate Frisbee. After moving to Carrboro in 2012 he was missing the physical outlets of the mountains when a friend suggested CrossFit. After a year long trial run at CrossFit UNC, he took the plunge and joined Local. The community support and challenging workouts told him that he had found his new base for physical activities. After two and a half years, he was finally ready to take the next step and worked hard to become a coach at Local. Michael is eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with everyone who walks into the gym.

PAUL SUMNER

COACH

Paul has been active all his life, mostly in some form of outdoor recreation. Starting in high school, he began to give attention to fitness. He was an average wrestler on his high school team. Paul was extremely fit, but not nearly strong enough for his weight class to be super competitive. He won about as many matches as he lost. After high school, Paul joined the United States Marine Corps and dedicated 5 years of his life to the direct service and defense of the best damn country on the planet, the United States of America. Obviously physical fitness was just a way of life in the Marines, but the most valuable thing he learned in the Corps was mental toughness. And that’s a character trait he shares with most CrossFitters; the mental fortitude to continue to push when most people quit. So when you come to Paul’s class, he expects your absolute best effort.

Paul was fortunate enough to be a member of a Search and Rescue team in Washington State for four years. Some of the toughest physical challenges he faced were back country hiking in full kit, up a mountain, in feet of fresh snow. Some of the fittest people he has ever met apply their fitness to save lives in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. He was fortunate to share that experience with them.

Paul has completed numerous 5ks, 10ks, mud runs and other various trendy tests of fitness. He has also competed in several Crossfit competitions as well. He’s currently training to increase his numbers in weightlifting for competition. He is an avid supporter of GORUCK events and continues to train and complete those on a regular basis. He is a stickler for form. Safety is paramount and proper form is how we keep you safe in the gym. Paul wants you to get a great workout, but more importantly, he wants you to leave healthy so he sees you in the gym again.

KEVIN LAWRENCE

COACH

Kevin is a native of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and brings 20 years of collegiate coaching to CrossFit Local, with 15 of his last 20 years spent at the University of Kansas and the University of North Carolina Swimming and Diving team. As the Head Men’s and Women’s Diving Coach, he has coached numerous All-Americans at UNC, All-ACC selections, an ACC Champion, Junior National Champions, and UNC’s 1st Olympic Trails Qualifier.

With an education degree and years of teaching and coaching under his belt, becoming a coach at Cross Fit Local was an obvious and easy transition for him. Athletically, Kevin has ran track, swam, dove, played football, tennis, gymnastics, run half marathons and pretty much anything you can name. He was a former DI scholarship athlete. Kevin is a dare devil trying
anything from skydiving to cliff jumping/diving.

He was inducted into his High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was a Peace Corps volunteer serving in Mongolia from 2012 to 2014 in the city of Erdenet.
