Common words, abbreviations and acronyms used at CrossFit Local.

Box:

the gym

Affiliate:

a gym/box that’s affiliated with the CrossFit brand; gyms must have CrossFit certified coaches

HQ:

CrossFit Headquarters, based in California, started by CF founder Greg Glassman

The Games:

The CrossFit Games, sponsored by Reebok, and held in California every summer, finds the fittest in the world after narrowing down the field with the Open and Regionals.

The Open:

The CrossFit Open allows everyone (even you) to register and compete in the Games workouts

Firebreather:

really competitive CrossFitters who Rx everything

Pukie the Clown:

CF mascot who represents what happens when you push too hard; also the creepy face that marks your meters around the building

Rx:

the workout as prescribed

L1/L2:

Level 1 and Level 2; milestones on your way to Rx

AMRAP:

as many rounds/reps as possible

EMOM:

every minute on the minute

WOD:

workout of the day

PR:

personal record; don’t forget to ring the bell!

Metcon:

metabolic conditioning, trains endurance and conditioning primarily

Oly lifts:

Olympic barbell lifts – snatch, clean and jerk

Power:

catching the barbell in a position above parallel

Hang:

starting with the barbell at or above the knee

Hook grip:

a way to hold the barbell during Olympic lifts, with thumb around and fingers around thumb to keep bar more secure
